PTSO Meeting 09/20/2011

1. Welcome to the PTSO

a. New President Steve Schneeberger and new Principal Sra. Marta Shahsvand gave insight into their roles and backgrounds.

2. Child Care Expectations during PTSO meetings

a. Children will be supervised by a para professional in a classroom setting with more organized and quiet activities.

b. The group is looking for donations of puzzles, DVD’s, music, art supplies and other items. PTSO is open to suggestions for ideas. Email melissa.campana@richfield.k12.mn.us with your ideas.

c. Donations for care are $1 per child.

3. Transition Committee

a. Group of 10 parents meeting with principal of the Richfield Middle School to map out plan of continuing Spanish-based education for RDLS students once they begin studies at the RMS. Contact SteveScheeberger@edinarealty.com for more info.

4. School Directory - Jen Spickelmier

a. School directory intake form sent in home Thursday’s folder.

b. Plan is to have forms ready to send home at Fall Break.

c. Jen is looking for volunteers to assist with data entry. Please contact Jen at gjspick@usfamily.net if you are able to assist with data entry.

5. Garden Update/Peace Pole – Karen Sherman & Melissa Campana

a. Our Outdoor Classroom has been completed with grant and much assistance from RDLS families. Thanks to Kate and Troy Clarity for all of their help!

b. Look for JARDEN Updates from Karen as planting season arrives.

c. Melissa is looking for anyone with woodworking skills to create a sign for JARDEN. Melissa is also working with a company to obtain a Peace Pole.

d. Ideas for JARDEN dedication are being formed. Contact melissa.campana@richfield.k12.mn.us with your ideas.

6. Amity Scholar – Karen Sherman

a. Clara De Campo of Spain is our Amity Scholar – volunteering her time in our school. Her goal is to become a teacher. Currently she is working with the younger RDLS students to assist them with their day to day activities.

b. We are looking for families to invite Clara into their homes to share different family activities, usually on the weekends. Contact Karen.Sherman@richfield.k12.mn.us .

c. Clara is currently living with the Sherman family until the end of December. We are looking for other families to host Clara. Please contact Karen for more info.

d. We are looking to add more Amity Scholars as they are a great investment for our school and community.

7. School Store – Jen Spickelmier

a. Idea for store came from the STEM school – funds raised go to the Gifted and Talented Parent Group who support District-wide programs.

b. The store will be open one time per week and staffed with students from the GT Program. The Pencil Machine is a big hit so far.

8. RDLS Back to School Night

a. Volunteers needed to staff table 10/06/2011 Thursday

b. This is a Parent’s Night (children are advised to stay home). Get to know your child’s teacher and learn about the expectations of the classroom, homework, etc.

c. Two Sessions - Kinder, 2nd & 4th grades from 5:00pm - 6:15pm; 1st and 3rd grades from 6:30pm-7:45pm.

d. Presentations given by your child’s teacher.

9. T-shirt design contest – Steve

a. Deadline for submissions were due 9/20/2011 but will be extended to 9/23. Goal was to have shirt designed by an RDLS student. Requests for long sleeve t-shirts.

10. Family Movie Nights – Gina/Steve

a. Looking to put a few dates on the calendar. This is a great fundraiser that brings the community together.

b. Please contact Gina Schneeberger gigi7705@yahoo.com if you would like to help or if you have other ideas for family night type of activities.

11. Book Fair - Cindy Lybeck

a. Teresa Kemmer has volunteered to oversee the operations of the Book Fair.

b. Event will run Tuesday Oct 18 4pm – 8 pm and Wed Oct 19 8am – 8 pm. Please contact tessi22@yahoo.com for volunteer opportunities.

12. Other Fundraisers – Steve

a. Looking to have a Fund Raising Committee to help organize events for Davanni’s, Culvers, Chipotle Peace Coffee, Read-A-Thon and finding other opportunities.

13. Walk for Autism – Melissa Campana

a. RDLS Monarcas MOA 9/25/2011 8-10am. Meet up at 8 am at the MOA Rotunda.

b. The walk begins at 8:15 am. Resources fair to follow.
