RDLS PTSO Meeting Notes 11/15/2011

1.        Staff Introductions: Shirley Bartlett-Outreach Worker and Annie Hoff-Social Worker

a.        Shirley will coordinate parent helpers and volunteers for the school; great resource for translation and communications.  She has created a list that will be sent home, that requests parents volunteer for opportunities within the school during the school day and beyond.  Trying to communicate the expectation of 2 hours of family volunteering each month at school.

b.       Annie is a behavior support specialist for the students – sets behavior expectations, bus issues, counseling, and other student needs.

2.       Officer Reports - none

3.       Book Fair recap – Teresa Kemmer and Cindy Lybeck

a.        Event made over $4,000.  Approximately $2422 went to school.

b.       Each teacher was able to choose $80 worth of books for their classroom.

c.        The media center was also able to get $1760 worth of books from the Fair.

d.       Thanks to Teresa and Cyndi for their coordination of the event.

4.       Culver’s recap

a.        Culvers will donate 10% of register receipts to RDLS from the 5-9pm time frame.  We estimate that we made over $300 from the event.  RDLS is the best group they have had and they would like us to return for another event in the late winter/early spring.

5.       Amity Scholar Update – Clara

a.        Looking for open dates for activities with families

b.       One family took her to a trip to St. Paul to visit the capitol, the Cathedral, and Café Latte.

c.        Please give it a thought to have her spend some time with your family.  It doesn’t have to be fancy – just a snippet of life as an American family.

6.       Transition Committee Report – Lisa Hintermeister

a.        Small group has been meeting to discuss the commitment from RDLS and RMS on the transition of students from our school to the middle school and perhaps onto the high school.

b.       The Group, including Brian Zambreno (RMS Principal), visited Anwatin Middle School in MPLS to study their program which includes Dual Language Immersion.

c.        Currently studying best practices and new ideas as to where program can extend.

d.       The Group would also collect input from the current 4th grade class as to what they would like to see in the program.  There was also discussion on bringing in students from other programs so they can talk with our students about how they like their program.

7.       Fundraising Committee Formation – Steve Schneeberger

a.        Looking to have a group head up a committee to funnel the hundreds of ideas and thoughts around fundraising

b.       Group would coordinate the events and canvass for volunteers to staff the events

c.        Fundraising will become more important as we look to bring in more Amity Scholars (due to lack of funding and failure of recent referendum).

d.       Please contact Steve Schneeberger to get involved steveschneeberger@edinarealty.com

8.       Volunteer Groups

a.        Sheet will go out in Thursday folders for volunteer needs of the school (bus, recess, lunch, classroom) and parent committees (Fundraising, Community Outreach, Multi Cultural Fair/Festive Events).

b.       There was a thought for to have two parent volunteers for each classroom who would head up calling for volunteers.  We would like to have input from the staff on this idea.

c.        Getting more parent volunteer involvement creates a more cohesive community for our school.  We all have talents to share and something to bring to the table.

9.       Movie Night – Gina Schneeberger

a.        October’s event made $500.  We would like to do more of these as there is little time and effort in order to execute the event.

b.       Looking for another event on Friday Dec 9th with holiday movie (Polar Express, Elf, etc.) Please contact Gina if you have a movie choice in mind gigi7705@yahoo.com
